Purpose:

• This instrument is used to determine the elongation index of aggregates.
• A particle is considered elongated when its length (longest dimension) exceeds 1.8 times the midsize of the sieve fraction.

Significance & Use:

• This method classifies aggregate elongation by measuring the length of individual particles.
• The test is not applicable to material retained on a 63.0 mm BS test sieve.

Construction Details:

• ISI Marked.
• Consists of a hardwood base with vertically mounted stainless steel (S.S.) studs.
• Eight S.S. studs are mounted.
• Aggregate is separated into seven sieve fractions (63 mm to 6.3 mm); each fraction is examined individually.
• Elongation index is determined by the mass percentage of particles that fail to pass between the respective pins.
